Want to give your outdoor space an update but you don’t have the budget for a new set of patio furniture? No problem! There are so many ways to refresh the outdoor space on the cheap. In today’s post, we are listing down affordable ways to brighten up outdated outdoor furniture of all kinds:

1. A Fresh Coat of Paint

One of the easiest (and fastest!) ways to refresh outdated patio furniture is adding a fresh coat of paint. You can do this two ways: applying paint the traditional way or spray painting. A fresh coat of paint can go a long way towards making tired furniture look like new! Just prep the furniture for painting by washing the piece of furniture and adding a layer of primer. The primer will help the color stick effectively to the surface of the area being painted. Then, apply two layers of color and leave to dry.

2. Consider Reupholstering

Instead of getting a new set of chair seats to create a pretty outdoor space, get the old ones reupholstered instead! Patio seats tend to discolor faster because of the constant sun exposure. Reupholstering the seats after a few seasons help restore the chairs back to their old glory. You can get your patio chairs reupholstered professionally or you can do it yourself. Just choose a stylish fabric and use a staple gun to change the covering of the seats.

3. Adding Colorful Slipcovers

An even easier alternative to reupholstering is using slipcovers to update a drab porch furniture. Slipcovers are affordable, stylish, and easy to install.  They also add a layer of protection to the furniture from the sun’s damaging rays. Slipcovers come in various colors and patterns to choose from. Because the change is not permanent, you can change the slipcovers every season.

4. Treating Natural Wicker

If your patio furniture consists of a set of wicker furniture, apply tung oil to restore the wood’s natural luster. Although wicker is incredibly resilient under direct sunlight, the material will lose its natural luster eventually. Just wash the wicker furniture well, leave it to dry and then apply the tung oil. The oil will harden to a deep finish that doubles as a protective layer against the elements.

5. Colorful Accessories

One way to brighten any area of the living space is adding colorful accessories. For outdoor spaces, we recommend adding colorful cushions or pillows to add a fun, fresh vibe to your patio furniture. You can also stack several books and use scented candles as bookends. You can also add a colorful throw on the sofa as an accent. Another way to update your outdoor space is by throwing in a decorative rug or carpet! You can get a rug in basic shades or in a bold hue to add a pop of color to your porch.

6. Removing Rust

It is fairly easy to remove rust from metal furniture. Just use a stiff wire brush and rub the rusted spots vigorously. The wire brush should dislodge loose paint and rust. Then, sand the painted edges, wash the metal furniture and leave it to dry. After that, you can start re-painting the furniture and make it look like new again.
